Some books you read. Some books you enjoy. But some books just swallow you up, heart and soul. – Joanne Harris
It’s been twenty three hours and four days since I finished reading YOU by Caroline Kepnes. And boy did I get schooled! I’d honestly say this is the most original book i have ever read. It made me reconsider a lot of things like what type of content we post on social media and the dangers we might be getting myself into.
Set in New York, this dark and twisted story follows Joe Goldberg a bookstore clerk who becomes obsessed with a customer, Beck, who comes into the store one day to buy books. After making small talk about books, he makes it his job to know everything there’s about her from stalking to hacking her e-mails.

Other than being extremely humorous, I loved the fact that this book was written in second person. We see the story develop from Joe’s perspective, which made it more personal and like I was more present in the story. Not the ‘Beck came home, Beck did this’ type of way. Rather, ‘You came home, you did this’ style. And this made it even more creepier.
As for the characters, both Joe and Beck are strong characters but have these traits that make them very selfish and unlikable people. I thought Beck was narcissistic and a horrible person . As for Joe, I wasn’t necessarily rooting for him but I would find myself continually laughing at what he says and agreeing with him.
One negative aspect of this book would be it’s abit too long and I guess some bits would have been trimmed down.
All the same, I would give it a 4/5 rating and I would highly recommend this book.
Let me know if you’ve read it, would want to read it or any other books you’d recommend I read.
